{Thank you for checking in on our “Letters to my Children” blog circle! This is a personal project and a way to share my thoughts with my own children.  I will be updating this blog with a letter to one or both of my children monthly. Along with me are some other lovely ladies who are taking on the same project, check out Casey’s letter to her daughter!}

Dear Quincy,

Earlier this month, in exchange for your cooperation during family photos the day prior, I agreed to take you and your best friend Max up to Rattelsnake Lake to scale the endless tree trunks currently exposed after a very dry summer.  It was a beautiful fall evening, with a warm wind blowing and a really lovely sunset dipping behind the ledge. Maisie was at home with dad, which left me free to focus on following after you and Max, and  I really enjoyed watching the two of you play.

I noticed some things as I observed you. First, I noticed the wind blowing through your wild hair…the same wild hair I beg you to brush EVERY morning, as if it is a brand new task on your morning list. But, I love it. It is so “you” and it felt good to watch it whip around in the warm, wind outside. Next, I saw how easily your strong legs climbed up and down each trunk and boulder. Fearlessly taking you where you wanted to go and old enough to do it without any help from me, or anyone else.  Then I saw your smile and heard your laughter, content to be playing with your friend without a care in the world. No complications or worries, no nagging doubts or thoughts of all the things you should be getting done. Nope. Just a kid, being a kid.  And lastly, I watched you quietly observe and take it all in. You are a busy, busy boy, but at the top of each tree or rock you paused. I could see you taking a moment to just BE. I love your ability to experience the moments as they happen and I very much hope it is something you are able to continue to do throughout life.

I love you my beautiful, wild child.

Always,

Mommy
