For this month’s Ten on the Ten, it’s special guest time. As you may or may not know, Cicely injured herself taking a photo of our daughter. Turns out that snap shot caused a very large herniation of a disc in her back. Unfortunately it required surgery. Good news the surgery was a success, the bad news, Cicely hasn’t been taking photos. So, instead of ten photos of our ceiling or the ER’s ceiling, or various examination room’s ceilings, she asked me to pinch hit and discuss my monthly trip to the Seattle Japanese Garden. Although, after typing pinch hit, maybe I should have discussed my favorite place to photograph, Safeco Field. Well maybe some other time.
I have a photography membership at the Seattle Japanese Garden which allows me access twice a month to the garden prior to normal hours of operation. Along with exclusive access there are some other perks as well, include license to the photos. Anyway, mornings at the Japanese Garden are a lovely place to quietly walk and take photographs without the tourists and other riff-raff. Frankly it can be difficult to find the garden interesting sometimes, especially after having gone there 15 or 20 times. To keep it fresh, I try to challenge myself to try new things. Sometimes its about using different camera and lens combinations, or maybe photographing the architectural details and not the flora and fauna. This forces me look at this landscape and detail differently and hopefully take new and somewhat different photos. Sometimes it works very well, sometimes it doesn’t work so well, either way the a morning at the garden is a very pleasant experience.
